If you stock hair extensions for your salon, you have seen the labels: Remy, Virgin, Raw, Non-Remy. What do they actually mean — and which one should you buy? Here is the definitive guide for wholesale buyers.
| Grade | Cuticles | Processing | Lifespan | Wholesale price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Virgin Hair | Intact, unidirectional | None (never dyed, bleached, permed) | 2–5 years | $80–150/pack |
| Remy Hair | Intact, unidirectional | Minimal (mild dye, gentle steam) | 1–2 years | $35–60/pack |
| Non-Remy Hair | Mixed directions (fallen hair) | Heavy chemical treatment | 3–6 months | $10–20/pack |
Virgin hair comes from a single donor. It has never been chemically treated — no dye, no bleach, no perm, no relaxer. The cuticles are completely intact and all aligned in the same direction. Virgin hair is the highest grade and commands the highest price.
Because virgin hair is unprocessed, it only comes in natural colors: black (1B), dark brown (2), and occasionally natural brown (4). You cannot get virgin hair in blonde or fashion colors without processing it — at which point it is no longer virgin.
Remy hair also has intact cuticles aligned in one direction, preventing tangling. The difference: Remy hair may undergo mild processing — gentle dyeing to achieve 38+ colors, light steam treatment for texture, or minimal chemical processing that does not strip the cuticles.
Remy hair offers the best balance of quality and price for salon use. It lasts 12–24 months with proper care, can be colored, heat-styled, and reinstalled multiple times.
Non-Remy hair is collected from salon floors, brushes, and multiple donors. The cuticles face different directions, causing immediate tangling. Manufacturers apply heavy silicone coatings to hide the tangling — but the coating washes off after 2–3 shampoos, revealing the mess underneath.
If a price seems too good to be true, check for silicone. Wash a sample strand with clarifying shampoo. If it turns into a tangled mat, it is non-Remy with a silicone disguise.
For 95% of salon clients, Remy hair is the right choice. It looks and feels premium, lasts over a year, and costs 50–60% less than virgin hair. Stock virgin hair only if you have celebrity or ultra-premium clients who specifically request it and are willing to pay $500+ per installation.
